Traditionally, The NBR, based in New York City, is the earliest critics' circle to announce its year-end picks, and often their decision is an indication of how the Oscars (February 27, 2011) will pan out. Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and No Country for Old Men (2007) were both winners in the past that went on to find Oscar gold, but last year's top film Up in the Air didn't fare as well compared to The Hurt Locker.
Among others recognized were Christian Bale as Best Supporting Actor for The Fighter, Toy Story 3 for Best Animated Feature and newcomer Jennifer Lawrence for Breakthrough Performance on Winter's Bone. Sofia Coppola won the Special Filmmaking Achievement Award for writing, directing and producing Somewhere.
